In 2009, following a successful SXSW, the timing seemed right to start a record label. As Los Lonely Boys were coming off their deal with Epic, and various other management clients had albums looking for a home, it just made sense to create the label. And thus, Playing In Traffic Records came into being! Artists signed to the Playing In Traffic label are: Los Lonely Boys, SPEAK, The Dunwells, girl pilot (aka Sahara Smith) and Dame. As Kevin states, “It really seemed like a natural progression to continue to provide services to our artists, and give them a creative outlet for their music.” Playing In Traffic Records is distributed by RED, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
The team is rounded out by Mary Jurey, another seasoned record label vet, who started out in the business working for the artist Mary Chapin Carpenter, and subsequently spent time at Columbia Records (west coast), and a 7-year stint at New West Records, before joining with Kevin in 2010. Additional team members include Emmy Black who recently came on board after a stint at Bar None Records, with Shane Holloman – IT Administrator, and jack-of-all-trades Jake Turner. Our motto is: to embrace a self-starting ingenuity, and offer our artists a variety of services in a creative and nurturing music haven where they can grow and flourish.
In mid-2013, the Playing In Traffic team joined forces with indie rock darling Ben Kweller, who was managing his own imprint The Noise Company. Kevin was named the President of Noise Co and the rest of the team was brought on board to help steer the label. Noise Co artists include Ben Kweller, Wild Child and growing! The label is distributed by ADA, a division of Warner Music Group. You can find out more about The Noise Company.
With all the traffic/congestion in today’s music industry, we strive to clear a path for our artists. “There are so many different ways now that music is being marketed and distributed. We work hard as a company to be nimble and change in order to create opportunities for our amazing stable of artists,” states Jurey. We hope you enjoy driving around our site and checking them out!
